Memories of this wonderful Bramwell High School teacher will be with her former students forever.

Stella Bernece Peck Hicks, 87 of The Havens in Princeton, formerly of 1101 Harrison St. in Princeton, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Princeton Health Care Center. Born in Princeton October 24, 1921 she was the daughter of the late Charles William and Bernice Jane Spangler Peck.

Bernece retired from the Mercer County School System in 1980 after a 35-year career that started at Bramwell High School and ended at Princeton High School. Throughout her career she taught shorthand, typing and bookkeeping and served as the chairperson of the Business Department of Princeton High School. She was a faithful and formerly active member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton where she sang in the church choir. She was a graduate of Princeton High School and Concord University. Bernece was an avid bridge player and loved working with her hands on a variety of crafts and projects that included gardening and her personal favorite, quilting. For several years she enjoyed spending her summer months at Claytor Lake with her family and friends. In addition to her parents and two brothers, Ben B. Peck and Charles W. "Buck" Peck preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Carson Spencer Hicks of The Havens in Princeton; one daughter, Kathy Gray Hicks Lester and her husband Melvin of Bedford, VA; one son, Mark Stephen Hicks and his wife Margaret of Pearisburg, VA; step-granddaughter, Anna Stevens, several nieces and nephews including Linda Peck Carbone and her husband Tom, Donna Peck Akers and her husband Mark and Wayne Peck; special close friend, Anna Gray Branyon; special friends and caregivers at The Havens in Princeton and former caregiver Florence "Flo" Wimmer.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Burial will follow in the Peterstown Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends called at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. (Monday, March 23, 2009). Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 1116 Mercer St., Princeton, WV 24740.
