Featured is a view of the
Historic Thompson House that is located on the Chestnut
Oak Estate. This house was once the home of the pioneer
Thompson family. Robert and wife, Mary Alice Thompson were the parents of
Wesley Peyton's wife, Bertha Leen Thompson Peyton. The Peyton
family settled on the Autumn Haze Farm property adjoining the Thompson property in the early
1900s.
Mary Alice Thompson was born in 1873 and died in 1955 at the age of 82 years. Mrs. Thompson is burried at the Grigsby "Hedgesville" Cemetery that is located on land joining the Chestnut Oak property. Her grave marker is shown below. Wesley Peyton and Mary Thompson's daughter, Bertha Leen Peyton are also buried in this local cemetery. Mr. Wesley Peyton died at his home in 1963 at the age of 72 on what is now known as Autumn Haze Farm at Chestnut Oak. Old timmer "Precher" Raymond Ausbury who lived acros the mountain from the Peyton farm said on the morning of Wees Peyton's death that a bell located in the yard of the Peyton house was rung to alert the neighbors of Mr. Peyton's passing. His wife, Betha Thompson Peyton died Nov. 7, 1965 at the age of 71. The Thompson house dates back over 100 years ( late 1800 ) and it's location is featured on the 1999 Rappahannock County Historical map. The Thompson family owned and farmed about 30 acres of land that joined the Peyton land. Both lands were once a part of what was formally known as the larger Murphy track of land. Photographs taken Dec 31, 2002. |
