ELBERT, WV - GARY NO. 7 COAL MINING COMPLEX

Gary No.7 mine at Elbert, WV

In 1905, U. S. Steel's newly formed subsidiary company, U. S. Coal & Coke Company, began construction on its Gary No.7 mining complex at Elbert, West Virginia.  Elbert was one of the twelve U. S. Coal & Coke Company, Gary Hollow mining communities.  The No.7 mine was assigned 2,900 acres in the Pocahontas No.4 coal seam and by 1944, the No.7 mine was joined with the Gary No.6 mine at nearby Ream.  The No.7 coal tipple was then taken out of service and the remainder of the No.7 coal seam was then pulled through the mountain to the No.6 mine and its coal tipple.
