Arlington Coal & Coke Company - By Buddy French

The Arlington Coal & Coke Company was incorporated January 27, 1892
and it leased 931 acres of coal in the Pocahontas No.3 coal seam in
September 1893. The coal company and its community were located at
McDowell, Wv. The Arlington community shared the same post office
address with the Greenbrier Coal Coke Company and McDowell Coal &
Coke Company. All three coal company communities were interconnected
and formed one large community. The Arlington mine shut down in 1938
after producing 5,714, 963 tons of high grade, metallurgical coal.

Your author recently did a virtual tour of the Arlington community using
Google Earth Street View to cruise through the Arlington neighborhood.
The Arlington Coal & Coke Company ceased operations eighty-seven
years ago. The coal tipple, related structures and majority of the homes
are now gone. But what your author did find were a few remaining, well-
maintained homes of a bygone era that dates to the 1890's. No, you will
not hear the industrial sounds of the coal mining industry here today.
Instead, you may hear a lawn mower that's mowing grass in this beautifully
maintained neighborhood, located in a mountain hollow full of early coal
mining history.
