IN MEMORY OF NANCY MITCHELL MILLER

Nancy Selwyn Mitchell Miller, Bramwell High School Class '53, passed away November 29, 2009. Nancy will be remembered as a beloved classmate that was always special among her peers. Nancy Selwyn Mitchell Miller, 74, of Charleston passed away peacefully Sunday, November 29, 2009, at the Hubbard Hospice House following an extended battle with breast cancer and Alzheimer's. She was born July 27, 1935, and was a daughter of the late Helen Thorn Mitchell and John Eugene Mitchell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Merrill Sullivan Miller; and sister, Jean Mitchell Vines. Nancy is survived by her husband of 50 years, C. Donald Miller of Charleston; daughter, Selwyn Knap and her husband, Mike, of Lafayette, Colorado; brother, Phillip Mitchell and his wife, Mary, of Roseville, California; and many nieces and nephews. Nancy was a vivacious woman who loved chocolate and had an infectious laugh that will be missed by many. She lived life to the fullest and some of the many highlights of her life include being the first head majorette at Bramwell (W.Va.) High School, being one of the first women to graduate from Virginia Tech in industrial engineering, and traveling the world, visiting all seven continents and all 50 states.

In January of this year, she and Don traveled to Israel, which was a very spiritual experience. Nancy, Don, Selwyn and Merrill spent two wonderful years living in Puerto Rico, during the start-up of the Union Carbide, Ponce plant.

Nancy volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House for more than 20 years and was a member of the Catherine Blair Circle at Christ Church United Methodist, where she was a longtime active member.

The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care Nancy received from in-home caregivers, as well as Hubbard Hospice House, where she spent her final few days. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, December 3, at Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier St., Charleston, with the Rev. Dr. Randall Flanagan, the Rev. Dr. Janet Flanagan and the Rev. Harley D. Scalf officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Charleston. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to the service on Thursday, all at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier St., Charleston, WV 25301, Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311, and/or the Alzheimer's Association West Virginia Chapter, 1111 Lee St. E., Charleston, WV 25301. Charles Donald (“Don”) Miller, 85, formerly of Charleston, WV passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville, Colorado following a short illness. He was born October 4, 1930 in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a son of the late Charles Clemens Miller and Luana Born Miller.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son Merrill Sullivan Miller, wife of 50 years Nancy Mitchell Miller, sister Charlotte Miller O’leary and step mother Sadie Miller. Don is survived by his daughter Selwyn Knap and her husband Mike of Lafayette, Colorado; brother Elmer J. Miller of the Villages, Florida; sister Ruth Ann Nash Peel and her husband Malcolm of Amherst, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews and cousins. Don was a wonderful man who loved his family dearly.

His favorite hobby was traveling and he and Nancy visited all 50 states, all 7 continents and most Canadian provinces. He was an avid reader and sports fan, and enjoyed bowling and photography. Don was always on the go, always up for an adventure, especially if there was something new to be learned or experienced. He graduated from Walnut Hills High School, and earned a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor fraternity. He also held an MBA from West Virginia University.

Don worked at Union Carbide for more than 35 years, most of his tenure at the Institute, WV plant. He was also in the production planning group for the Ponce, Puerto Rico plant where he and his family spent two wonderful years. He was a member of the investigative team for the Bhopal, India disaster. He was a 50-plus year active member of Christ church United Methodist.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.M., Friday, October 30 at Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier Street, Charleston, WV with the Reverend Jay Parkins officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Charleston, WV. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M., Thursday and one hour prior to the Friday service, all at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia chapter, 1111 Lee Street E., Charleston, WV 25301 or to Christ Church United Methodist.CH
