WILLIAM "BILL" DUVALL AND WIFE, GRACE HART DUVALL

William "Bill" Jasper Duvall was born on May 13, 1904 and raised on his family's farm. He was born in Hoadly, Va, now part of Lindendale Road in what is now known as Dale City, Virginia.

Bill Duvall's father, Ullysses Grant Duvall (Born in 1867) married Anna Hixon. He was a corporal with the 3rd US Volunteer Engineers. He and Anna had three children; Carl who died at 2, William Jasper Duvall and Blance Irene Duvall (Uhler). Ullysses and Anna lived in a 3 or 4 room log cabin with his parents in Hoadley, (Dale City area )Virginia. In the early 1900s they built a house a house next to log cabin that they then referred to as the "summer kitchen". William "Bill" Duvall spent his youth in this house.

William "Bill" Jasper Duvall's Mother, Anna Duvall died on March 27, 1910, when he was only a six years old. His sister, Blanche was 8 years old at the time of Anna's death. He was rasied by his father and later by a stepmother. Blanche was raised by relatives. During his youth he helped his father haul mining timber props to town of Occoquan,VA where they were placed aboard barges. Mr. Duvall and his father operated the first electrical power generators for powering street lights in the town of Occoquan.

William "Bill" Jasper Duvall became a well known builder of homes in the Northern Virginia. He built homes and commercial buildings for almost 50 years before retiring and coming to Amissville, Virginia in April 1968. He purchase 16.4 acres of land and built his retirement house (1968-1971) using mostly his own labor. He lived in this house from Apri l971 until the summer of 1981 when his health failed. Soon after that he entered a nursing home in Frederickburg, Virginia where he remained until his death on 23 June 1986. His wife, Grace Hart Duvall was born on August 19, 1901 and died while living in this home in August 1977. She was a school teacher in her younger years. Mr. Duvall passed away in June 1986 at the age of 82. They had one son, William Hart Duvall (16 Dec. 1926 - 5 May 1992).

Mr. Duvall had one sister, Blanche Irene Duvall Uhler. Blanche was born on 26 April 1902 and died on 2 July 2000 at the age of 98. Blanche visited the Duvall property many times and was a guest at Chestnut Oak and Autumn Haze Farm during the 1980s. It will forever be a joy to have known this wonderful person along with Mr. and Mrs. William "Bill" Duvall.

The Duvall property was purchased by the William Petty family in June 1990. This land has since been integrated into the Chestnut Oak and Autumn Haze Farm property.

Blanche Irene Duvall Uhler

Born in 1902, Blanche Duvall married Earl Dean Uhler in Pikesville, MD. LTC Uhler served with the 11th field artillery in France during World War 1 and later he was the Provost Marshall for Maryland and surrounding states responsible for the POW camps during WWII. Blanche was a homemaker, avid gardener and member of the Halethorpe Garden club. She was a life long volunteer giving many years of service tot the Spring Grove State Hopsital in Baltimore county and at Walter Reed Army Hospital. She spent many winters in St. Petersburg, Florida and was very active with programs at the Army Distaff Hall in Washington, DC for many years. Blanche Irene Duvall Uhler passed away at Knollwood Army Distaff Hall in Washington, DC. She was born in Hoadly, Virginia on April 26, 1902, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ullysses Grant Duvall. Blanche grew up in a log cabin between Quantico and Mannasas Virginia. Her mother was Anna Hixon from Spring, Gap West Virginia. Anna was remembered as a wonderful person who never angered. Her mother died when Blanche was 8. Her mother died on March 27, 1910, Easter Sunday. Blanche then stayed with a cousin in Washington, DC for a while. She sometimes with Charles Bohanon at 12th and D street. She lived close to the Smithsonia Museum and Washington Monuument. When she turned 11 her father decided he could not manage a girl so she was moved to Relay, Maryland where her aunt Carrie Duvall Roby lived. Blanche lived in Relay until she married and only saw here father occasionally. 

 In 1920 Blanche married Earl Dean Uhler in Pikesville, MD. THE DUVALL HOUSE, AMISVILLE, VA

The Duvall House was built by William "Bill" Jasper Duvall during the years 1969 - 1971 as a retirement home for him and his wife, Grace Hart Duvall. They moved into the new house in April 1971. He lived there until 1981 when his health failed. Mrs. Duvall was living there when she died in August 1977.
