IN MEMORY OF DOUGLAS G. MURPHY
Lt. Colonel Douglas G. Murphy, age 76 of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away Friday morning, September 3, 2010 at his residence. Mr. Murphy was born on December 7, 1933 in Bramwell, WV the son of the late Margaret and George Murphy.
After graduating from Bramwell High School in Bramwell, West Virginia in 1951, Mr. Murphy graduated from Bluefield Jr. College and then received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Concord College at Athens, West Virginia in 1955.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1956 and served 23 years, which included two tours in Vietnam. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1979.
After his retirement from the Marines, Mr. Murphy lived in Tallahassee with his wife, Agnes where he was employed by the State of Florida until 2000 when he retired and moved to Fernandina Beach.
Mr. Murphy enjoyed collecting military helmets and hats, reading, and spending time with his family. He leaves behind his wife of over 20 years, Agnes Murphy of Fernandina Beach, Two daughters, Belinda Jill Sheldrake of Jacksonville and Jan Brewer of Ponte Vedra Beach, One son Douglas Murphy of Jacksonville, Two sisters, Molly Davidson of SC, and Terry Reed of Princeton, WV and Six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on September 14, 2010 at Jacksonville National Cemetery with full military honors.
