EVELYN COOPER MURPHY

 

Birth: Nov. 15, 1929, Death: Jul. 10, 2004

BRAMWELL, WV - Evelyn Cooper Murphy, 73 of 138 Main Street, Bramwell, passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at her residence. Born on November 15, 1929 in Bramwell, she as a daughter of the late Edward Cooper, Jr. and Mildred Mitchell Cooper. She has been a lifelong resident of Bramwell and was a member of the Bramwell Presbyterian Church where she had served for 35 years as the organist and choir director. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Bramwell Town Council, and served for the last six years.

She served as chairperson for Bible in the Schools at Bramwell Elementary until the time of its closing. She was a member of the Bramwell Historical Landmark Commission and the Bramwell Development Authority, and was an avid supporter of the Mercer County Humane Society and American Cancer Society. She formerly worked for WKOY Radio where she had her own radio show. She also had her own dance band, the Rhythm Jets.

She attended several private schools, including the Sunshine School in PasseGrille, Fl. And had taken private voice and piano lessons from Mr. and Mrs. Otto Ettinger in Pasadena, Ca. She was a graduate of Bramwell High School. She was a poet and had a book published, and received many poetry awards including the Editor's Choice Award for Achievement in Poetry, which was presented to her by the International Library of Poetry.

She was also a homemaker, where she was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, her husband, HARRY DONNEL MURPHY; and a sister, Douglass Lee Cooper Smith preceded her in death. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include son, Kim Christoper Murphy and wife Dawn of Bluewell; daughter Kelly Murphy Eller and husband Michael of Bramwell; and four grandchildren, Jessica Michelle Eller, Erin Laurel Eller, Keenan Shea Murphy and Brennan Seth Murphy.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Rev. Dale Compton and Chaplain Phil Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where Jimmy Carver, Ken Kirby, Brennan Murphy, Donnie Goins, Carl Miller, Jeff Vance, and John Godbey will serve as pallbearers. Roger Goins, Bill Foster, Jimmy Vance, Wilson Poff, Keenan Murphy, Kenny Beard and Jeff Cornett will serve as honorary pallbearers. Friends may call today from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Murphy family was served by Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell.
