IN MEMORY OF: WILLIAM FREDERICK PHARR
William Frederick Pharr passed away in his home in Danville, Pennsylvania on Monday, July 30, 2018, after a long and productive life. He and his family have resided for greater than 40 years in the area.
Born in Bramwell, West Virginia in 1940 in Coal Country, the youngest of four children, William "Fred" Pharr began under humble circumstances, yet this didn't deter his eventual participation in the healthcare profession, allowing him to lead a life filled with intellectual challenge and public service.
He graduated as valedictorian of Bramwell High School and then supported himself through Davidson College in North Carolina and medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, beginning his long surgical career in 1965. Prior to this time he met his long-standing love Suzann Morton, of Slab Fork, West Virginia, and they wed in 1964.
He came to the Geisinger Clinic in 1965 to begin his surgical training, he then served his country with distinction in Vietnam in a surgical capacity, earning a Bronze Star, prior to eventually returning stateside where he pursued Cardiac and Thoracic training in Chicago, Illinois. Fred and his family then eventually returned to Danville where he spent the majority of his professional career working at the Geisinger Clinic as a surgeon in the Cardiovascular and Thoracic division, eventually serving as head of this division for many years prior to retiring from practice at Geisinger. This allowed him numerous opportunities to help others in this capacity.
In addition to medicine, which was an all-consuming passion for him, he enjoyed aviation, travel, woodworking, the peace of his farm, and his extended family. He had an insatiable curiosity and was committed to a lifetime of learning. Questions were always his trade, and direct ones at that. This is familiar to all who knew him. When not participating in the above, one would find him with a book, newspaper, puzzle, or on the computer, with an easy smile when engaged.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Suzann Morton Pharr; his three sons, Thorr of Danville, Tarkten of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Nathan of Malvern; three grandsons; and numerous members of the extended family on both sides, in whose company he took immense pleasure. The Pharr family wishes to thank those in the community who have been so helpful, caring, supportive, and respectful in this trying time.
A private family service is planned. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to send a donation to the Danville Area Community Center, P.O. Box125, Danville, PA 17821. Published on August 2, 2018
"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
