GARNETT RUSSELL BAILEY

Lt. Col. Garnett Russell Bailey, USMC, Ret., 93, of Fairfax, VA, peacefully passed away on September 11, 2020 surrounded by his family.  He was born on July 23,1927 in Saltville, VA and graduated from Bramwell High School in 1946.  Garnett  briefly attended VPI then enlisted in The Marine Corps before receiving appointments to the Naval Academy Preparatory School and the U. S. Naval Academy where he was a proud graduate of the Class of 1952.  Following graduation, he married Rita Lovern at the Bland Street Methodist Church in Bluefield, WV.

Upon graduation, he began his distinguished service in the U.S. Marine Corps as a communications officer. During his career, he attended the Naval Post Graduate School and was a decorated Viet Nam veteran.

After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1973, he earned a Master's Degree from American University and worked for Computer Sciences Corporation and DCS. In retired life, Garnett dedicated hours to his beloved USNA Class of 1952 and many Masonic organizations. He was a member of John A. LeJeune Lodge, No. 350, serving as  Worshipful Master in 1969 and secretary for 10 years. During his 60+ years as a member of the Masonic Fraternity, he held multiple positions of leadership. As a Shriner, he drove children to the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital and arranged flights for families to the Boston Shriners Children's  Hospital. 

He loved fishing, history, Navy football, genealogy and organized many family reunions. Garnett and Rita travelled throughout the world and enjoyed their annual trips to Hilton Head, SC. They often returned to Hawaii to visit friends from when he was stationed there.

Garnett is survived by his loving wife, Rita Bailey; daughters Suzie Sterrett (Jeff), Becky Guenthner (Terry); sisters-in-law Barbara Bailey, Pam Lovern, Patsy Fultz; nephews Jim Bailey (Cathy), Phil Mahood (Valerie), Richard Fultz; nieces Kim Croy (Brian), Norma Jean Bailey and many thoughtful cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Grace Bailey, brothers, Jim and Roland Bailey.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
