The Pocahontas coalfield developed a good reputation, and by 1902, U.S. Steel had set up a subsidiary company named U.S. Coal and Coke, to mine coal in McDowell County.  The operations centered around Gary, with numbered coal mines/camps surrounding the central coal town of Gary like coal town suburbs.  Here are the names of all the original Gary Hollow mine numbers and their community names.  No.1 Wilcoe, No.2 Alpheus, No.3 (main Gary), No.4 Thorpe, No.5 Leslie, No.6 Ream, No.7 & 8 Elbert, No.9 Filbert, No.10 Venus, No. 11 Thorpe and No.12 Anawalt.  In the late 1940's, two more mines were opened in Gary Hollow with accompanying communities.  They were No. 13 Moses and No.14 Munson.  Most of the homes in Gary No.3 or what was called Main Gary, are still there and occupied.  The big No.3 clubhouse, company store, power plant and coal tipple are now gone.  The farther you go up the hollow into the adjoining Gary coal camp communities, like Thorpe (No.4), Leslie (No.5), Ream (No.6), Elbert No.7 and 8, Filbert No.9 and Venus No.10, many of those houses no longer remain standing. There were several different neighborhood communities in Main Gary (No.3), with names like Red Cross Street, Church Street, Highland Avenue, Powerhouse Row, Lovers Lane, Hunk Hill, Pinch Back and Gary Bottom.
