HARLAND HOWELL (March 12, 1934 - September 4, 2013)
Harland A. Howell, 79, of Mansfield, passed away late Thursday evening, September 4, 2013, due to complications from a lengthy illness. He was born in Montcalm, West Virginia on March 12, 1934, the son of John H. Howell and Glendola (Bird) Howell.
He was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Indians fan. He retired from Empire Detroit Steel with 36 years of service. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and of the Masonic Lodge in Shiloh. He had also completed the 32nd degree of Scottish Rites. He served in the United States Marines Corp in the 1950’s, just missing the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Daisy (Rachel) Howell, older brother Kenneth, younger sisters Margie Murray and Nancy Wall. He is survived by his son Bradley (Tammy) Howell, Mansfield; grandchildren Brooke (Dustin) Smith, Mansfield; Zachary (Sarah) Howell, Camp Pendleton, CA; Blake Howell, Mansfield; two great grandchildren Elise Smith and Lyra Howell; and a sister Carol Saddler of High Point, NC. He had numerous other close friends and neighbors among which are Art and Sue Phillips, Jim Miller, Dan Martin, Monroe and Carol Lewis and Carlas and Sandy Gillum.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at MedCentral Hospital for his care in his final days. Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Road, Ontario where Masonic services will be held at 4:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2013 at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Ron Puff. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park where full military services will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or the American KidneyAssociation.
