HARRY FRANKLIN HENSLEY, SR.
(1924 - 2009)

 

Harry Hensley Sr., 84, Bismarck, died July 16, 2009, at a Bismarck hospital.


Funeral services were held on Monday at 10:30 AM at First Baptist Church in Bismarck with Rev. Steve Wisthoff officiating. Burial will be held at 1:00 PM at the ND Veteran’s Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post #1326.


Visitation was on Sunday from 4:00 – 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.


Harry Franklin Hensley Sr. was born to George and Evelyn (Browne) Hensley on December 23, 1924, in Buchanan, Kentucky. He graduated from Bramwell High School in May, 1942. Harry was employed as a machinist with the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, Maryland. Harry was on active duty with the Navy from 1943 to 1946, and spent 20 months overseas. After his discharge, he moved to North Dakota with his sweetheart, Peggy Mitchell . They were married at the Methodist Parsonage in Linton, North Dakota, on April 6, 1946. Peggy and Harry bought their first home together the same year and started their family. Harry was the office manager for Builders Supply Company for many years before retiring in the mid 90’s.


Harry touched many lives during his 55 years of work with Alcoholics Anonymous. He was also an active member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years.  In recent years, Harry spent his time collecting cans and donated the money to local charities. Harry's love of the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and camping, is carried on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.


Harry is survived by his two sons, Harry Franklin Hensley Jr. and Brian Douglas Hensley; as well as seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.


Harry was preceded in death by his mother and father; his wife Peggy Mitchell Hensley; his sister, Mildred Shrader; his brother, Douglas Hensley; his son, John Richard Hensley; and his daughter, Sharon Lynette Hensley.
