IN MEMORIAM

JOHN WESLEY PETTY

John Wesley Petty: February 24, 1932 – November 21, 2014

John Wesley Petty was born February 24, 1932 in Freeman, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Retha Mae Petty, and his three children: Steve, Harold and Debbie; his five grandchildren: Steve Jr., Jason, Sarah, Ryan and Marissa; and one great grandchild Lenci; his three brothers: Arnold, William and Kenneth.

John graduated from Bramwell High School in 1949, and married Retha in 1952. He joined the Navy with his lifelong friend, Benny Proffit in 1952, and served on the USS Forrestal. After leaving the Navy he returned home to Bramwell, West Virginia. After being blessed with three children, he moved his family to Alexandria, Virginia, where he worked as an airline mechanic for Capitol Airlines. He eventually started his own painting contracting company. He continued to operate the business until he retired in 1995.

In the late 1960's John and his family spent weekends building a house on land he had purchased in Amissville, VA. He loved the "farm", and being away from the city where he could gaze out on the lake, feed the catfish, grow huge tomatoes, and live among nature. John was a wonderful family man and very active in his children's lives, teaching them the value of hard work and high moral standards. He was also an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener, and woodcarver. The incredible details in his carvings are a testament to his patience and artistic talent. John never sold his carvings, but generously gave them away to his family and friends. John loved to socialize with his friends and never missed a chance to share a bottle of wine from his cherished wine cellar. He was a dedicated husband, and celebrated his 62nd wedding anniversary with Retha on January 14, 2014. John will be missed by family and all who knew him, and will be remembered as a great husband, father, and true friend. All those who knew John Wesley Petty will always cherish their memories of him.

Donations can be made in John Petty's name to Hospice of Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Va 22911, 434-817-6900.
