The Lynchburg Coal & Coke Company was incorporated on March 24, 1890, in McDowell County West Virginia, It leased 1,017 acres of coal in the Pocahontas No.3 coal seam from the Crozer Land Association. H. T. Adams was president and J. J. Tierney vice president. The coal company built a total of 214 coke ovens, but they were shut down in 1920 when the steel mills began coking the coal. After operating for fifty years, the Lynchburg Coal & Coke Company shut down its mining operations on Aug 6, 1940, after producing 9,193,367 tons of coal.
