BRAMWELL HIGH SCHOOL CLASS 1927
IN MEMORY OF LEO POWELL HAYNES
Leo Powell Haynes was the owner of the PURE OIL GAS STATION in Freeman, WV that built in 1938. The Pure Oil Gas Station was opened by Bramwell resident, Leo Haynes in 1939. It is located on Rt. 52 near the bottom of Pinacle Mountain within the present Town of Bramwell city limits. The building has stood empty for many years. Leo Haynes owned this business during the 1940s and throught the 1960s. He was a long term school bus driver with Bramwell High School and later worked for the State of West Virginia. He was born Dec. 24, 1908 in Bramwell, WV. He was living in Bramwell, WV at the time of his death on Jan. 26, 1981. Mr. Haynes was a life long resident of the Town of Bramwell and was a community leader. He was born on December 24, 1908 in Bramwell, WV to the late Ashford Keen Haynes (1877-1911) and Lucy Greer Powell-Haynes (1883-1971) (per WV Register of Births, Mercer County, WV, 1908, Line 4). He was survived by his wife, Lena Lee Whitehead-Haynes (1908-1988) whom he married on August 24, 1933 in Mercer County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Mercer County, WV, 1933, Page 41, Line 19, Application Date: August 24, 1933); a daughter, Anna Haynes; and his siblings, Richard L. Haynes (1903–1994) and Francis E. Haynes (1906–1982). Burial information is currently unknown. He was a 1927 graduate of Bramwell High School. The BHS 1927/28 yearbook "Music" (shown below ) states that he was a member of the BHS 1926-1927 boys quartet. He married Lena Lee Whitehead on August 34, 1933 in Princeton, WV. Lena was born on Feb. 2, 1908 and died Jan. 3, 1988. They had one daughter, Anne Haynes Hickman (1934-2018). His home on Bramwell's beautiful Brick Street is included with the many beautiful Historic Bramwell Houses. This house is known as the HICKMON HOUSE and is featured in the West Virginia survey of Bramwell historic houses and buildings. The below photo of Leo Haynes was taken during the 1949 BHS Homeoming Parade. Leo was the President of the BHS Band Boosters Club at that time.
