SPRINGTON, WV COAL COMMUNITY

Springton, West Virginia is on Rt. 10, four miles north of Matoaka and on the right fork of what was formerly the N&W Railroad's Widemouth Branch.  At that location, W.M.W. Spring leased 1,478 acres of the Pocahontas No. 3 coal seam.  He organized the Spring Coal Mining Company on June 26, 1903 and began coal shipments in October 1904 after the railroad completed a spur to his location.  After building housing for his coal miners and their families, he named his community Springton.

On July 31, 1913, the Spring Mining Company signed its coal lease and mining operations over to the Solvay Collieries Company.  In 1923, Solvay Collieries Company changed its name to Kingston Pocahontas Coal Company.  Although Springton was a small coal camp by most standards, it was a thriving and close-knit community at one time.  In 1942, the Springton mine was shut down after the coal lease yielded 9,965,239 tons of coal over its lifetime of operation.  Unfortunately, there are few, if any, early photos available today showing the Springton tipple, mining operation or community.  Only in one's imagination when viewing photos of the Springton company store, can you visualize a payday weekend and seeing a steady stream of miners and their families shopping at the company store.

The original drift mine ceased operations in 1942 after producing nearly seven million tons of coal.   In the mid-1950s, the Century Mining Company developed a strip-mining operation along the Pocahontas No. 7 coal seam. A fire in 1956 destroyed most of the conveyors that transferred coal from the mine to the tipple.
