On January 10, 1942 the Town of Salem, VA bought the 18-room Thomas Henry Cooper "Longwood" mansion. It was used as a community center until it burned during renovation work in 1968. The Carriage House still remains. Today, the 11-acre tract known as Longwood is a children's park.
