A SOUTHERN WV COAL MINING COMMUNITY

WEYANOKE, WV

The Weyanoke Coal & Coke Company was founded on Dec. 2, 1902 on the left fork of the N&W's Widemouth Branch.  A coal lease was secured for 1,040 acres in the Pocahontas No.3 coal seam, 1.25 miles west of Matoaka and coal shipments began in June 1904.  Although the community today is still referred to as Weyanoke, the sign over the post office door identifies the location at that time as Lowe, Mercer County W. Va.  The coal company was given a Native American name, Weyanoke, like so many other coal companies in southern West Virginia.  The Weyanoke Coal & Coke Company closed out its mining operations there on Dec. 26, 1936 after the coal lease had been mined out.

Weyanoke is an unincorporated community in Mercer County, West Virginia, United States. Weyanoke is located on County Route 11, 1 mile west of Matoaka. The community was named after the Weyanoke Indians, perhaps via the local Weyanoke Coal Company.
