MEET THE HISTORIC BRAMWELL AUTHOR - WILLIAM A. PETTY If you visit the Buckeye He graduated from Bramwell Bill served four years in the Navy as a electronic specialist. He is a graduate of West Virginia University from which he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. His early engineering career centered around supporting critical Navy shipboard communications systems. He later became internationally known for his pioneer work in the pulse power field associated with nuclear generated Electromagnetic Pulsed Environments (EMP). He served as the Director of the Army's Lead Laboratory for Nuclear Electromagnetic Effects during the 1980s. Bill was acknowledged by the Dept. of Defense and received Presidential recognition for his technical and managerial leadership rolls in EMP hardening of critical weapons and communications systems. He received the Army's distinguished Meritorious Civil Service award. The second-highest award granted to civilians, The Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award is approved at the MAJCOM level.. He received awards for both management and techinical leadership from Harry Diamond Laboratories ( HDL ) and was sponsored for the Army's R & D
Achievement Award for the technical management concerning the development of the first threat level EMP, TEMPS Having served as a Technical Engineering Consultant during the early 1990s, Bill and his wife, Reva, both retired in 1995 and moved from Fairfax County in northern Virginia to their farm in the village of Amissville, VA. Here on Autumn His memories of the West Virginia hills, Bramwell, and Bramwell High School remain vivid and cherished. He now enjoys his retirement here at his Autumn Haze farm.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGOUND: William Petty was internationally recognized in the field of High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP). His background includes technically managing field test programs requiring the use of "threat level" EMP simulators and associated state-of-the-art instrumentation. He has directly managed major EMP vulnerability assessment test programs for both DCA and DNA to ascertain the HEMP vulnerability of the United States AUTOVON facilities at various locations throughout the United States. He technically directed the development of the first "threat level" HEMP simulator in the United States. Mr. Petty technically managed the Army program for HEMP hardening of strategic transportable systems that support time-sensitive functions. This technology demonstration program served as a DoD initiative to upgrade technology, incorporate this technology into military standards and specifications, and establish a formal technology transfer program throughout the DoD and user community.
