MEET THE HISTORIC BRAMWELL AUTHOR - WILLIAM A. PETTY

If you visit the Buckeye Tipple page on the Historic Bramwell web site you will see the birth place of this site's author/editor. He was born in a Buckeye Coal & Coke Company house, located about 100 yards from this tipple. His father and many of his relatives were among approximately 200 miners responsible for digging, loading and hauling the coal from a mine located in Buckeye Hollow just off Simmons Creek. This primative coal mining camp in southern West Virginia was typical of a miner's family living environment in the late 1800s and through the 1930s. The author's very early childhood days were spent in this harsh coal camp environment.

He graduated from Bramwell High Sch. in 1953. He was inducted in to the Nntional Honors Society. He was the BHS Senior Class President and President of the School Student Councel.

Bill served four years in the Navy as a electronic specialist. He is a graduate of West Virginia University from which he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. His early engineering career centered around supporting critical Navy shipboard communications systems. He later became internationally known for his pioneer work in the pulse power field associated with nuclear generated Electromagnetic Pulsed Environments (EMP). He served as the Director of the Army's Lead Laboratory for Nuclear Electromagnetic Effects during the 1980s.  

Bill was acknowledged by the Dept. of Defense and received Presidential recognition for his technical and managerial leadership rolls in EMP hardening of critical weapons and communications systems. He received the Army's distinguished Meritorious Civil Service award. The second-highest award granted to civilians, The Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award is approved at the MAJCOM level..

ARMY CIVIL SERVICE AWARD

  He received awards for both management and techinical leadership from Harry Diamond Laboratories ( HDL ) and was sponsored for the Army's R & D Achievement Award for the technical management concerning the development of the first threat level EMP,   TEMPS SIMULATOR.

Having served as a Technical Engineering Consultant during the early 1990s, Bill and his wife, Reva, both retired in 1995 and moved from Fairfax County in northern Virginia to their farm in the village of Amissville, VA.  Here on  Autumn Haze Farm he spends his time as a "gentleman" farmer while enjoying the beauty of rural Virginia. Bill has been a avid gardner for over fifty years. He is locally known for growing delicous tomatoes Neighbors call him the Tomato Master. He still manages an extensive Bluebird Santuary here on the farm. He also raised Honey Bees here at Autumn Haze Farm for over 30 years. Over the last 25 years he has authored and managed the " Historic Bramwell " web site.

His memories of the West Virginia hills, Bramwell, and Bramwell High School remain vivid and cherished.  He now enjoys his retirement here at his Autumn Haze farm.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGOUND:

William Petty was internationally recognized in the field of High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP). His background includes technically managing field test programs requiring the use of "threat level" EMP simulators and associated state-of-the-art instrumentation. He has directly managed major EMP vulnerability assessment test programs for both DCA and DNA to ascertain the HEMP vulnerability of the United States AUTOVON facilities at various locations throughout the United States.

He technically directed the development of the first "threat level" HEMP simulator in the United States.
Mr. Petty served as Laboratory Director the Army's Electromagnetic Labatory. In this position, he directed over 100 engineers, scientists, and support personnel in the hands-on conduct of applied research in the field of High Altitude EMP (HEMP). He provided the technical and managerial leadership for the Army's Lead Laboratory in the nuclear generated EMP area. He provided technical management for the DoD and the Army's test facilities at the Woodbridge Research Center that were used to perform EMP assessment testing on major DoD communications and weapons systems. He was responsible for making formal vulnerability statements from test data on tactical and strategic systems.

Mr. Petty technically managed the Army program for HEMP hardening of strategic transportable systems that support time-sensitive functions. This technology demonstration program served as a DoD initiative to upgrade technology, incorporate this technology into military standards and specifications, and establish a formal technology transfer program throughout the DoD and user community.
