Colonel John D. Hewitt Grave Site

Riverside Church - Freeman Cemetery - Freeman, WV

Colonel John Hewitt was born in Lancashire, England in 1847 and came to the United States in 1852. He died in 1903 and his grave is located at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Freeman, West Virginia. His remarkable life story as a true coal baron in the southern West Virginia coalfields is highlighted on the Bramwell history page. The lower photograph shows the burial site of John Hewitt on October 11, 1903 at the Oak Hill Cemetery. The top photograph was made n 1999. The bottom photograph was taken at the time of Colonel Hewitt's funeral in 1903. His death notice as it appeard in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph can be found @:
