Lawrence ( Larry ) R. Grainger


Lawrence (Larry) R. Grainger, 67, of Roan Mountain, TN, died October 24, 2011, in Winter Springs, Florida, of complications resulting from Alzheimer's disease.  

Larry was born in Bramwell, WV, to the late C. Robson and Eloise E. Grainger, formerly of Bramwell, WV, and Orlando, FL. Larry grew up in Bramwell, WV, and spent a delightful childhood there.

He graduated from Bramwell High School, and attended National Business College in Roanoke, VA. He was a graduate of Orlando Junior College in Orlando, FL.  He joined the U.S. Navy in 1965 and served aboard the U.S. Independence during the Vietnam War.

He met his wife of 43 years, Beverly, while stationed at the naval base in Jacksonville, FL. They lived in the Orlando area, where Larry served the Winter Park Fire Department for 23 years as a firefighter and deputy fire chief.

Upon his retirement in 1996, he and Beverly moved to Roan Mountain, TN. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain. Larry loved bike riding, canoeing, camping, and listening to bluegrass music.
 
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Kathryn Grainger of Orlando, FL; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Andrew Knott of Derby, KS; four grandchildren; and sisters Julie Granger Whittaker of Collierville, TN, and Frances Stone of Fairfield Glade, TN.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly.
