BAILEY of Sinai Mountain, Goodwill, WV
|This photograph of Alexander L. ( Alex )"Pap" Bailey was probably
made in about 1900 - 1905 time period when he was in his
late 20s or early 30s.
Alex "Pap" Bailey was born on March 7, 1874 and died on 6 Sept, 1939 at the age of 65. He was the evening shift foreman for the Buckeye Coal and Coke Company mines in Buckeye Hollow for many years and at the time of his death on 6 September 1939. He had worked in the coal mining industry for forty five years at the time of his death. He died about 12:30 AM on the morning just after completing the night shift at the Buckeye mines in Buckeye Hollow,WV .
It is said that Mr. Bailey owned the first automobile driven on Sinai Mountain. He was a well respected coal mining pioneer in the Goodwill, WV area. He spent 45 years of his life in the coal mining business. He was known to loan money to many friends and acquaintances with a notation just made on a scrap piece of paper. At the time of his death he had thousands of dollars out in this type loan. When the Historic Bramwell Bank indicated a declaring of bankruptcy Mr. Bailey refused to withdraw his money from that bank and accepted bankruptcy payouts from the bank's payout plan over the rest of his life.
Alex Bailey's parents were John and Julie Anne Burton Bailey. Alex Bailey's father died young leaving a young widow with several small children.: This is a facinating story "Read the Life of Alex Bailey's Mother" and family that reveals the tragic death of the father and the Bailey's children. Alex Bailey had a twin sister, Belzora Bailey.
History has it that one could walk through a mine that was located just down the hill from the Bailey house to the Buckeye Hollow No. 1 mine that was several miles away. It was quite common for people to travel from the Buckeye Hollow Coal Tipple to Goodwell on the weekends using this route throught the mines. Several of the Bailey children and relatives lived in the Buckey Hollow Coal Company houses and worked at the Buckeye No. 1 mine. They made this journey through the mine often. Additionally, from inside the Bailey home one could hear the rumble of coal mining cars passing through a mine that was located well beneath ALEX BAILEY'S HOME.
Alex and Lucinda "Cindy" Bailey ( May 12, 1873 - June 21, 1949 ) had eight children: Charlie Lee (May 19, 1896) , Buster, Cletus (1902 -1949), Earnest "Pete", Della Mae Bailey Robinson (Jan 1, 1900 - 1972), Raymond (May 28, 1909 - 1986), Garland (March 26, 1907 - Aug 5, 1985 ) and Avis Elizabeth Bailey Petty (Aug. 3, 1911 - Jan 9, 2000 ). Alex and Cindy Bailey are buried in the Bailey Cemetery that is located on a hill top about 1/4 mile from the Bailey home place. Two of the Bailey sons, Cletus Bailey and Garland Bailey are also buried in this cemetery that is located on a hill top near the Bailey family home on Sinai Mountain, WV.
