Harry Italo Yon, 83, beloved husband of Wanda Lucille Thompson Yon, passed away on April 9, 2005 in Lexington. Harry was born September 25, 1921 and raised in Bramwell. He was proud of his Italian heritage and the community where he was raised. Harry graduated from Bramwell High School and served in the U.S. Navy for six years, 1939-1945, and in the U.S. Naval Reserve, 1945-1951. He was a Chief Pharmacist's Mate on the USS Haven and was at the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Island. Mr. Yon was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He was a Manager and Pharmacist for Walgreen's Company for 37 years in Decatur, Champaign, Mattoon and Mt. Zion, Ill. He was dedicated to his customers and employees and earned an award for the largest prescription volume in the Walgreen chain in the United States.
Harry and his wife retired to Winter Haven, Fla. for 15 years and were members of the Haines City, Fla. Presbyterian Church. In 2002, they moved to Lexington and resided at Mayfair Village. Last July, he and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with friends and family from across the country.
Harry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wanda. They met while serving in the US Navy during World War II. He is also survived by three sons: Dr. Jerry Yon and his wife Pamela of Lexington, Donald Yon of Salem, Ore. and Charles Yon and his wife Elizabeth of Sherborn, Mass.; eight grandchildren: Michael Yon of Naples, Fla., Daniel Yon of West Palm Beach, Fla., Christina Yon of Oakland, Calif., Michael Yon-Stark of Lexington, Elizabeth Yon of Gambier, Ohio, Ahna Yon-Stark of Lexington, William Yon of Sherborn and Charlie Yon of Sherborn. Mr. Yon has three great-grandchildren: Julia Yon, Phillip Yon and Andre Yon. He also has two sisters, Eva Hill and Alma Murphy of Bramwell and a sister-in-law, Vese Thompson of Decatur, Ill. He has four nieces and three nephews: Christina Hill, Steve Hill, Greg Murphy, Lisa Lanier, Rick Thompson, Cheryl Smith and Kathy Sanchez.
Graveside services will be conducted by Chaplain Phil Parker at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Bluewell at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2005, where he will be interred near his beloved parents, Cristina and Livio Yon. Those wishing to attend the graveside services are asked to meet at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell by 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.Visitation is at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2005. Memorial gifts may be made to the Haines City, Fla. Presbyterian Church or the Diabetes Foundation.
